Improvements/more options

Closes #279 (closed), #198 (closed), #298 (closed), #303 (closed)

I think these issues are the most important to have for the next release. If you think I should include anything else from Milestone 0.13.0 please tell me. Otherwise I think we should move these for a future release and deploy what we have on test for them to play with.

For example, we didn't take a decision over #297 (closed) and I'm not sure if #251 (closed) is done
